Even though this news isn't "new," I took a trip down memory lane in preparation for an upcoming Disney trip. Splash Mountain was a big part of my childhood (and adult) memories of Disney World. It's closure marked the end of an era but the beginning of a new chapter. For decades, Splash Mountain was a beloved staple at Disney parks in Florida and California. Known for its catchy music, whimsical characters, and thrilling drop, it was a favorite among guests seeking a mix of storytelling and excitement. But in 2023, Disney made the decision to permanently close Splash Mountain, igniting a mix of nostalgia, debate, and curiosity about its replacement.
Why Was Splash Mountain Closed?
The closure of Splash Mountain wasn't due to technical issues or lack of popularity, it was a cultural decision.
Splash Mountain was originally based on the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, a movie that has long been criticized for its problematic portrayal of race and its romanticized depiction of the post-Civil War South. While the ride itself didn’t include the film’s more controversial content, its connection to the movie remained an ongoing point of criticism, especially in light of broader conversations about racial sensitivity and representation.
In June 2020, amid rising calls for racial justice, Disney announced it would reimagine Splash Mountain to be more inclusive and reflective of modern values. The company acknowledged the concerns voiced by fans and employees, stating:
“The new concept is inclusive—one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by.”
What Replaced Splash Mountain?
Taking Splash Mountain’s place is Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a ride themed around Disney’s first Black princess, Tiana, from the 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog.
About Tiana’s Bayou Adventure:
Opening: The attraction is set to open at both Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and Disneyland in California in late 2024.
Storyline: The ride picks up after the events of The Princess and the Frog. Tiana is now a successful business owner and is preparing to host a grand Mardi Gras celebration. Guests join her and beloved characters like Louis and Naveen on a musical journey through the bayou in search of a missing ingredient.
Music & Atmosphere: Featuring New Orleans jazz, vibrant animatronics, and lush bayou scenery, the ride aims to celebrate the rich culture of Louisiana while continuing the spirit of adventure Splash Mountain was known for.
Fan Reactions
The decision to re-theme the ride was met with a range of reactions. Some longtime fans were sad to see Splash Mountain go, citing nostalgia and its iconic status. Others welcomed the change, applauding Disney for making strides toward greater cultural sensitivity and representation in its parks.

Final Thoughts
Splash Mountain’s closure marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter. With Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Disney isn’t just changing a ride—it’s telling new stories that reflect a broader, more inclusive world. As parks evolve, this shift reminds us that the magic of Disney lies not just in nostalgia, but in its ability to grow, change, and inspire every generation.
